Omnigroup is the collaborative practice of Luke Archer (*1988), Leonardo Azzolini (*1990), Simon Mager (*1986) and Frederik Mahler-Andersen (*1989). The group operates within the fields of graphic design, type design, web development, visual identities and education. Omnigroup is based in Lausanne.

Omnigroup applied to the Swiss Design Awards with a selection of websites that have been designed and developed over the past four years. The projects range from documentation of design research initiatives and online archives to portfolios for photographers, designers and artists. Each website responds to an individual set of demands, combining design solutions and programming strategies, resulting in a holistic approach. Developing the entire process from concept to completion permits for an autonomous design methodology, balanced between the technological restrictions and the constantly growing possibilities of programming languages.

What is the task of design?

“Well, I mean, it’s pretty simple in some ways. There’s no rocket science behind it, really.”

How does design change life?

“Maybe to believe and to work hard and persevere and all that stuff. Clearly it’s going to take a few months.”

Is design always interdisciplinary?

“I say, ‘I just want to focus on one thing and do that a hundred percent’”

When does design reach its limits?

“It’s amazing how much choice you have, and you have to make a lot of decisions. In the beginning it was a little bit overwhelming, but it’s been a dream come true for me to be a designer.”

Is good design invisible?

“Most of the guys you won’t even see, because they will eliminate each other.”

Must design create something new?

“It doesn’t need to be the same every day, doesn’t need to be the same shower I use, the same restaurant I go to, the same hour I go to sleep. I’ve always been very flexible.”
