We invite you to re-visit Wolfgang Weingart’s oeuvre and get a unique insight into his work and projects at the Museum für Gestaltung in Zurich, opening today! Zürich’s Museum für Gestaltung organised Switzerland’s first comprehensive overview on Weingart’s work. Expect a rich accompanying programme, including a panel discussion, talks and workshops.
Weingart (*1941) is known for having revolutionised Swiss typography – as well as being it’s „enfant terrible“. The now internationally acknowledged designer ditched conventional letters in the mid 1960s, like those with right angles, and reshaped them. His typography seemed to gain a playful, independent life of its own. In the 1970s, he anticipated post-modern digital sampling strategies by including half tone films in his collages. Weingart thus distanced himself from the functional “Swiss Style” typography. As his cover for the magazine Typographische Monatsblätter claimed in 1973, “Typographie kann unter Umständen Kunst sein.” (Typography, under certain circumstances, can be art.)
We absolutely agree and had the chance to meet him in the exhibition this morning. The interview will be published on the SDA Blog within the next days!
