Couture Graphique @ Mudac Lausanne
20 May 2014

Fashion and graphic design: two closely tied disciplines. The connection emerged in the early 20th century when artists Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Sonia Delaunay applied their compositions to textiles. Surprisingly, the topic hasn’t gained lots of attention as an exhibition subject.
Lausanne’s Mudac currently explores the intersections in three parts: from the phenomenon of the “total look” (Burberry prints or Victor and Rolf’s iconic style that no longer needs logos to be recognized), to the combination of graphic design with fashion, to a third section comprised of state-of-the-art technology such as laser cuttings and intelligent textiles.
Alongside famous names like Maison Martin Margiela or Dries Van Noten, the exhibition presents up-and-coming young Swiss couturiers, like those from HEAD in Geneva and the Academy of Art and Design Basel, and proves the importance of graphic design for today’s fashion. Amongst them: Swiss Design Awards 2013 winner CAMILLE KUNZ and participant XENIA LAFFELY.
If we had one wish granted, we’d sneak a textile designer into this exhibition: this year’s Grand Prix Design winner ERICH BIEHLE whose vividly colorful textile pattern were used by Givenchy and Yves Saint Laurent, to name but two of many.
Until June 9, 2014.
