Performing for the Camera – Romain Mader at Tate Modern

Performing for the Camera – This could be the motto of this year’s Swiss Design Awards but it is the title of an exhibition at Tate Modern that shows phoney engagements, flying surrealists, faux Instagram celebrities, dubious family portraits … a short history of performance photography opening on 18 February.
Among works by Yves Klein, Cindy Sherman or Boris Mikhailov, Swiss Design Awards 2013 participant Romain Mader‘s Ekaterina series is on display. As the guardian writes “More elaborately deceptive still is Swiss artist Romain Mader’s series Ekaterina, in which he poses as a lonely man in search of a Ukranian mail-order bride, the balance between everyday normality (awkward poses, forced smile) and the slightly heightened colours of the clothes and landscapes playing deftly on the conventions of what might be called courtship snapshots.” Read the full article here.
